Speaker Guidelines for PIs

PI talks are an opportunity for Chicago Chapter Earthwatch Members (and others) to hear a description of your project, the science and the work that volunteers do. It helps people decide if they are interested in going on your project and familiarizes others with the kind of work that Earthwatch PIs and volunteers do. Of course it also is a chance for you to share your enthusiasm for your study area with the audience. The program is very informal; we will supply the screen, slide projector, and we have a sound system if you would like to use it.  We need to make special arrangements for a Power Point projector.

1.       Plan for a 45- 50 minute talk with 10 – 15 minutes allotted for questions.

2.       Describe where you project is located, particularly give the big picture of the location.

3.       Show the study subject and explain the objectives and results of the work.  Pretty pictures please.

4.       Mention the living conditions, especially if they are unusual. Describe the work and training briefly, and perhaps give an overview of a typical volunteer day.

5.       Share your excitement and enthusiasm but also mention any recommendations on why people may not want to participate in this project, e.g., lifting/carrying heavy objects, strenuous hiking, etc.

6.       Above all, have fun! People really enjoy hearing about Earthwatch expeditions and are delighted that you are sharing your experiences!
